Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis will announce at a press conference today that Edwin Alemany, the primary suspect in the murder of 24-year old Amy Lord, will be charged with first-degree murder thanks to the confirmation of DNA evidence. Alemany was being held in connection to the murder because of similar recent assaults on two South Boston women, as well as participating in the near-killing of a victim in September 2012. He will return to court on August 14.

Alemany, 28 was being held at Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental evaluation as police officials evaluated DNA evidence in an attempt to determine the identity of the assailant. Alemany had yet to be officially arrested.

Earlier this week it came to light that now former detective Jerome Hall-Brewster, in the September 2012 case where Alemany strangled a woman to unconsciousness and near death, did not follow up with Alemany regarding the autumn attacks along with taking series of other missteps, reported Boston.com. It was announced on Monday evening that Hall-Brewster has since been stripped of his detective ranking.

Of Hall-Brewster’s failure to act and the situation in general BPD Commissioner Ed Davis said at a press conference on Friday, “I’m very disappointed in what the detective did in this case. I would hope that a more thorough and aggressive stance … is something that we would pursue in a case like this.”

Around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23rd, Lord was allegedly kidnapped in South Boston on her way to the gym, after which her bank account was accessed from five different ATMs in the area. She was then allegedly stabbed to death, and her body was found later on Tuesday afternoon in Hyde Park’s Stony Brook Reservation.

Lord was a 24-year-old South Boston resident and Wilbraham, Mass. native. She graduated from Bentley University in 2011 and worked at Genuine Interactive, a creative agency in Boston.

Hundreds attended Lord’s wake on Monday in Springfield, Mass. Funeral services took place on Tuesday.
