Live streaming from Comic Con 2013 yesterday was the Divergent cast and crew giving an in-depth Q&A panel session. Included was director Neil Burger and novelist Veronica Roth, who penned the book off which the feature film is based, as well as Shailene Woodley and Theo James. Also starring Academy Award winner Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, and Jai Courtney, Divergent will be released in March 2014.

The premise of the movie builds on the perpetually popular dystopian future theme ŕ la The Hunger Games, but more on that later. In the future, Chicago society is divided into five factions that each represent a different virtue. Upon turning sixteen years old, the young adults must decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another and stay there for the rest of their lives.

Check out the Divergent cast and crew Q&A session here:

Burger is an accomplished director, having helmmed popular mid-range budget movies like Limitless and The Illusionist. Both of those two films combine for a $43 million budget, almost half of Divergent‘s hefty $80 million.

Of the script, Roth noted optimistically, “Reading a script is a really interesting experience. I’d never read a script before. I was really impressed by how closely it stuck to the general plot line of the book,” which should come as no surprise as the script was adapted by screenwriters Vanessa Taylor, who’s penned a number of Game of Thrones episodes, and Evan Daugherty who contributed to Snow White and the Huntsman.

Divergent was showcased alongside the popular Ender’s Game and both movies appear to be two of the biggest draws of the entire Comic Con 2013 exhibition. I’ve admittedly not read either of the source material novels for both flicks so I can’t attest to how well they’re adapted for the screen so let’s turn it over to you. How do you think the stories will fare on the big screen? Let us know all of your thoughts in the comments section below.
