UPDATE: Here is the final list of Kentucky Derby Post Positions

At 5pm ET tonight, the much anticipated Kentucky Derby post position drawing took place solidifying which horse will start in which spot and we’ll be covering it via live stream. Sure, post number one provides an instant advantage by giving the horse a slightly shorter distance to run but this is more than just a game of inches. Post position affects how trainers train, how jockeys ride but also, and possibly most important, how gamblers bet. Check out the Live Stream of the 2013 Kentucky Derby Post Position Draw below.

Surprisingly enough, post position one isn’t necessarily the best to have. According to BleacherReport, “Since the beginning of the 20th century, post No. 8 has produced the third-most Derby winners, along with post No. 10. However, compared to the other two posts that have produced two winners each since 2000 (Nos. 5 and 16), post No. 8 has been linked to the most recent champions at Churchill Downs.”

Post position one, while producing twelve Kentucky Derby winners since 1900, hasn’t produced a single winner since 2000. You might think the position with the least number of winners would be post 20 but, surprise, it isn’t. That distinguished dishonor goes to post position 17 having produced no winners since 1900. Position 20 has actually produced 2 winners since the 1900, one of those coming since 2000. Position 17’s neighbor, post 18 has only produced one winner since 1900, and none since 2000.
