At 1pm ET this afternoon, you can live stream the PS4 release date announcement from Gamescom 2013 in Cologne, Germany. Sony made it clear in the days leading up to the popular consumer electronics convention that its much-awaited next-gen console’s release date would be detailed at Gamescom as many fans and eager users were in the process of being acclimated to the idea of an October release.

You can watch the PS4 release date announcement here at 1pm ET:

Don’t close the live stream once the PS4 release date is revealed, though. Per the PlayStation blog,

“Shortly after the press conference, we’ll be holding a live panel discussion hosted by journalist and broadcaster Dan Maher, where some of the biggest names in PlayStation gaming, including Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, Beyond: Two Souls director David Cage and Assassin’s Creedwriter Darby McDevitt will be sitting down to discuss the role of narrative and storytelling in games.”

The PS4 has been in a perpetual press battle with the Xbox One, with both Sony and Microsoft releasing details on their respective consoles seemingly daily in order to outdo the other. And while Microsoft has already alluded to the Xbox One’s November release, they have yet to disclose an exact date. Cue the PS4 having the upper hand.

Both devices have been compared extensively from their controllers to their entertainment features, and each appears poised to become the next great video game platform for the entire world to enjoy. But is one really better than the other?

Depending on which console maker a user has opted for in the past and how deep their pockets are could be the deciding factor in choosing one in favor of the other. Both consoles will be building on cues from their predecessors which adds some convenience to the part of the user because they’ve seen variations of it before. And when it comes to cost, it’s important to note that the Xbox One is significantly higher for the first time both consoles have been pitted against each other, coming in at $499 to the PS4’s $399.

But don’t let the pice tag numbers deceive you, devoted gamer. The Xbox One is equipped with a developers kit to allow independent gamers to develop and publish their own indie titles. And if you happen to reside in Europe, a pre-order of the console will be rewarded with a free copy of FIFA 14. Xbox will be pushing both of these facets hard leading up to the fall where both consoles will surely hit the retail shelves, as it looks to separate itself from not only the PS4 but the likes of the Wii U as well.
