Boston demolished a portion of the Long Island bridge Monday morning.

Multiple choppers captured dramatic footage of the planned demolition, which knocked out one of three sections of the bridge. The city closed the bridge bridge last fall, citing safety concerns.

Three additional demolitions will take place in the coming weeks. No dates have been announced.

Spanning 3,450 feet, the Long Island bridge formerly served as a connector to Squantum’s Moon Island. Monday’s demolition was the first in an ongoing $20.6 million project, which has been in the works since Boston took the bridge out of commission last October.

The closure displaced a homeless shelter and multiple substance abuse programs for recovering addicts.
