Boston.com reports that the Hyde Park explosion occurred at 15 Riley Road. Multiple outlets had reported that crews responded to an apartment building at 19 Riley Road.

Police Commissioner Ed Davis told the Boston Herald that a man was mixing chemicals in the basement and lost one or both of his hands. According to Boston.com, Davis confirmed the man, Steve Carley Jr, lost both hands. He was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for treatment.

Davis said that there was no indication of terrorist activity, and there was no drug lab at the scene, Boston.com reports. Carley Jr. might have been experimenting with fireworks, Davis continued.

Fox 25 and the Herald  reported earlier that a bomb squad is on the scene. This was confirmed by a boston.com report.

The Boston Fire Department said the incident was reported around 9 a.m. Flames from the possible explosion were quickly put out, but firefighters are still at the scene.

Calls to the Boston police this morning reported a loud bang in the basement; the cause of the explosion remains unclear. Davis said the area is now a “safe environment.”

Police are checking if Carley Jr. had a criminal background, Boston.com reports.

His roommate was treated for respiratory problems after the blast, according to Boston.com

The four-story apartment complex is in the Readville neighborhood of Hyde Park.
