First, there was the inauguration for Marty Walsh, where he was sworn in as the successor to Thomas Menino. Now comes the real inauguration: his first sports wager with another city’s mayor. Ahead of the Patriots epic clash with the Broncos in Denver this Sunday for the AFC Championship, Walsh and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock agreed to an official bet over the phone.

The terms aren’t crazy. This isn’t quite the clash of gambling mayoral titans that Menino vs. Rahm Emmanuel was during the Stanley Cup. Still, it’s a contest for pride, so props to the new mayor for jumping right in.

And Walsh is shrewd about his bets, noting to local Denver news, “I’m the new mayor here in Boston, so I don’t want to talk too much trash because it’ll be on the front page of the paper.” Too late Marty, but nice try to keep it under the radar.

The terms

If the Patriots win:

– A sampling of Denver’s green chile.

– A free Broncos hoodie, hat, and handmade skis from Denver’s Icelantic Skis.

– Denver Mayor Hancock wears a Patriots jersey.

If the Broncos win:

– Boston Mayor Walsh wears a Broncos jersey. (Mayor Hancock already has a jersey picked out too, apparently: “You can probably imagine the number.”)

– A donation of chocolate turtles from Phillips Chocolates.

– A library donation of  books by Boston authors.
