Sure, the holiday season is about reflecting on reasons to be thankful, spending time with family and friends, and giving to those in less fortunate situations than one would like. But it’s also a gluttonous time of year, when holiday cheer is synonymous with food and drink of delicious variety. In that respect, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has compiled a list of “Healthy Heart Trails” to help you get outside before the grass is buried under inches of snow and burn off some of those extra holiday calories.

As you can see in the tweet above, the DCR estimates the average holiday dinner to contain some 4,000 calories while a simple one hour walk will burn 150 of those. Therefore, they hope you’ll take advantage of the more than 70 trails spanning all corners of Massachusetts to keep yourself not only happy, but also healthy.

You can view the entire list of trails right here.

As noted on the DCR website, “The program offers a great way to have fun and get exercise in a low cost way.”

The DCR organized the trails into five different geographical categories – Boston region, North, South, Central, and West – further breaking them down by community, name of trail, starting point, mileage, activity level, and ADA accessibility to help you discover a trail near you, one tailored to your level of experience, and to help you discover a new reservation or park all together.

Each trail is classified as either easy or moderate to accommodate as many trailblazers as possible, extending anywhere from less than one mile to 11 miles.

So as part of the DCR’s Healthy Heart initiative, they’re encouraging “walkers to visit Healthy Heart Trails in their neighborhood or across the state and to reach a goal of 75 miles walked by Labor Day. Join the Healthy Heart list serve for more information about how to achieve this goal and how to celebrate the success.” You can download your walking log to keep track of your mileage right here.

Happy trails!
