The turn of the New Year closed one chapter of the race for Governor of Massachusetts and since begun scribing another. The gubernatorial election is this fall, after all, and as we inch towards that fateful November day fundraising is expected to skyrocket. But, when it comes to raising money, some candidates are kicking off 2014 in better positions than others and it could be because of your neighbors.

The MassInc Polling Group compiled contribution data from the Office of Campaign and Political Finance on January 6 and overlaid it on a Google Maps interface to give viewers an idea of where the most money in 2013 came from and who it’s going towards. MassInc charted maps for total contributions from Massachusetts zip codes, as well as maps for each individual to see who’s raised the most cash.

According to MassInc’s map and the OCPF’s data, the most campaign contributions in 2013 came from “Hingham and Milton on the South Shore to Winchester and Andover to the north, and Brookline, Concord, Weston, Wellesley and Newton in MetroWest.”

What perhaps comes as no surprise, though, is that Charlie Baker, Martha Coakley and Steve Grossman have raised the most money thus far in that order. Those three boast the most name recognition while the rest of the field – Joe Avellone, Juliette Kayyem, Don Berwick, Jeff McCormick, Evan Falchuk and Scott Lively – are relative newcomers to the political arena.  Though some like Avellone, Kayyem and Berwick have worked in some form with the government, none have held elected positions.

See how much they’ve raised in the individual maps below:
