Massachusetts is a proud state. It’s proud of its civic leaders, occasionally proud of its public transit system and now, the Bay State is proposing a means of being visibly proud of its Olympic athletes. On Wednesday, February 12, Beacon Hill will entertain a measure to create specialized license plates solely for Massachusetts Olympians.

The bill was put forth by state Senator James Timilty (D-Walpole) last year and next week it will go before the Massachusetts legislature’s Joint Committee on Transportation. According to the text, the plates will “display on their face a design depicting the ‘Olympic Rings'” at no extra costs for the Olympian hoping to obtain one.

And it goes without saying that it’s mandatory for the athlete to be or have been “a member of, or have competed as a representative of, the United States of America’s Olympic team in the Olympic Games,” which must be confirmed by the United States Olympic Committee.

BostInno reached out directly to Senator Timilty to find out what his motivation behind the proposition is, but has yet to receive a comment.

What do you think, Boston? Are Olympics license plates a good idea even though they won’t generate revenue for the state or contribute to any state organizations or entities? Is this simply an elitist proposal? Or is this a great way to show pride in world-class athletes who hail from the commonwealth? Let us know your thoughts and ideas in the comments section below.
