Earlier in March it seemed as if the medical marijuana industry in Massachusetts was given a glimmer of hope, a reason to believe the unestablished new trade might emerge from its current cloud of controversy unscathed. But the first ever commercial to advertise medical marijuana on network television has yet to air, and it’s unclear at this point when it actually might.

It seems, though, that in Massachusetts, the commercial could hit the tube on the holiest of high days: April 20, a.k.a 4/20.

According to the Boston Herald, MarijuanaDoctors.com – the medical marijuana referral site which paid for the TV spot –  said the commercial would air in Massachusetts around April 20.

When it was first reported that MarijuanaDoctors.com had struck a deal with Comcast to play its ad, the company appeared thankful and even optimistic that they would move forward with a commercial-type that has yet to be seen on television.

And while it’s perfectly fitting that MarijuanaDoctors.com’s commercial play on 4/20, the problem is that it was already supposed to air.

“All commercials are subject to final review by Comcast Spotlight prior to airing, and during that process it was determined that the spot did not meet our guidelines,” Comcast spokesman Steven Restivo told the Herald yesterday.

Despite any commercial concerns, MarijuanaDoctors.com is expected to launch a Massachusetts-based campaign and may even sign deals with local cable providers to air their ads that way.
