On Sunday, April 20, children across the country will scour their homes for prize-laden eggs; families and friends will gather; and many will celebrate Easter. Others, though, of a greener persuasion, will take to Boston Common to enjoy the events put on by MassCann in celebration of the stoner holiday 4/20.

According to MassCann’s Facebook page, the smoke out will feature an aptly timed raffle at 4:20 p.m. Apparently the Easter Bunny is also slated to make an appearance “at #high noon.”

BostInno got in touch with NORML Board of Directors member Keith Saunders about the event via email and he told us activities will take place by the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at the heart of Boston Common. It sits upon a small hill that’s come to be known as ‘”Mt. MaryJane’ for years by local reform activists, and re-named ‘Mt. Michael Malta’ after a local activist who passed away suddenly in October 2013,” notes Saunders.

As you’ll see in the video above, MassCan helped raise $5,000 for a memorial bench in honor of Michael Malta, who is known colloquially as The King of Pot for his marijuana advocacy. He passed away in 2013 from a massive heart attack.

It’s unclear at this time what how the authorities will handle the event, if they do at all. Currently, Massachusetts law dictates that possession of less than one ounce of marijuana is decriminalized, though punishable by a $100 fine.

At the end of 2013, Boston officials banned smoking of any form on property operated by the city. Being caught smoking in such places as Boston Common is punishable by a fine of $250. A similar, peaceful, smoke out protest was held on the Common but it appears that the Boston Parks and Recreational Department is hesitant to enforce the law to its fullest extent.
