The 76th Masters Golf Tournament takes place beginning on Thursday, April 5th from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, running through Sunday, April 8th. The defending Masters champion is Charl Schwartzel of South Africa who won the 2011 tournament with a score of 14 under par.

The Masters will be televised on Thursday and Friday by ESPN and on Saturday and Sunday by CBS Sports. ESPN’s coverage begins at 3:00 PM Eastern Time on both Thursday and Friday, with CBS’ coverage beginning at 3:30 PM Eastern Time on Saturday and at 2 PM Eastern time on Sunday. The Golf Channel will also have additional coverage beginning at 8 AM on Thursday and Friday and 9:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday.

The Masters began in 1934, with the first tournament won by Horton Smith. It has been played every year since, except for 1943-5 when it was cancelled due to World War II. The prize fund for the 2012 Masters is $8,000,000, with the winner receiving $1,440,000. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Fred Couples, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson and World Number 1 Luke Donald will all be in competition this weekend at Augusta. There are 96 players in the tournament, each playing in 32 groups of three over the first two days, after which the cut will knock out those not in the top 44 (plus ties) or within ten shots of the lead.

The tee times for Thursday’s round of The Masters have Tiger Woods going off at 10:35 on Thursday morning in Group 15, Rory McIlroy teeing off at 1:42 PM in Group 31, defending champion Schwartzel going off in Group 24 at 10:24 AM and Phil Mickelson teeing off in the final group at 1:53 PM.

Woods will be going for his fifth green jacket at the tournament, which would put him in second place all-time for victories at Augusta, second only to boyhood idol Jack Nicklaus. The Golden Bear won six Masters tournaments during his career, in which he won 18 majors total.
