Slam Dunk with Mayor Walsh from City of Boston on Vimeo.

As the Junior Celtics worked hard to hone in their basketball skills, Mayor Marty Walsh worked even harder in an unusual slam dunk. This past Saturday, Mayor Walsh was hosted by the Junior Celtics at Madison Park.

Over twitter Mayor Walsh exclaimed “Great talent in that room!”

But no one could beat the exciting performance of Mayor Walsh assisting in an exciting slam dunk. Holding up that basketball to be jumped over was the real talent on display in the room.

The Junior Celtics program presented by the New England Baptist Hospital works with over 650 3-5th graders to improve their basketball skills, drills and leadership qualities. Children from the local YMCA’s, Boston Center for Youth and Families, Special Olympics, and Doc Wayne program participate in “clinic events” or workouts that are led by members of the Celtics roster according to nba.com.

The children are encouraged to improve their skills for a chance to go to a Celtics game as a Jr. Celtics All-star. A small group of selected “captains” work on community projects that are specific issues within their community. They are then presented with a Jr. Celtics leadership award on court at a Celtics game.
