36-year old Floyd Mayweather turned back the clocks last night and showed the world that he might just be getting finer with age. In the highly touted WBC welterweight title fight, Mayweather won a unanimous decision over challenger Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with the scorecards reading 117-111 in favor of “Money” Mayweather.

Mayweather was so dominating in fact, that many sportscasters and boxing pundits have since referred to the bout as boring and predictable.

According to MMA Fighting,

“Guerrero tried to make things interesting early. Mayweather opened the first few frames without much movement, either with his head or feet and Guerrero was able to score with counter shots of his own. However, as time went on, Mayweather was able to make adjustments to everything Guerrero could offer. By the final round, Guerrero was forced into pressing Mayweather against the ropes while he attacked the body in a failed attempt that was headed nowhere.”

Kudos for Guerrero for even stepping in the ring with, arguably, the best pound-for-pound fighter ever to put on a pair of boxing gloves. All throughout press conferences, the weigh in, and other promotions Guerrero was cool, confident, and actually made me believe he would put a stop to Mayweather’s undefeated streak at 43 W’s. But in the end, Mayweather’s signature swift defense and levelheaded boxing sense was enough to prevail.

Even more impressive was the fact that “Money” injured one of his fisticuffs, noting in a post-game interview, “”I hurt my hand midway through the fight, but I couldn’t do it without my team. My team put together everything outside of the ring.”

This was reminiscent of when my friends and I ordered the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Mayweather fight back in ’07. Expecting a fight in which each boxer would exchange punch-for-punch, Mayweather glided to a seemingly easy win. But despite having a big mouth and an even bigger ego, Mayweather was quick to give Guerrero credit where credit was due. “”He’s a true warrior, “Mayweather said of Guerro after the bout. “I take my hat off to Robert Guerrero. It was blood, sweat and tears tonight. What else can I say?”

Though Mayweather can add another digit to his victory column, the real winner is likely to be the strippers he infamously drops tens of thousands of dollars on when he comes into some big “Money.”
