On Sunday morning a MBTA bus crashed in one of the scariest ways possible, smashing into a guardrail and hanging off the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The accident took place at Newtown Corner, a major entrance and exit ramp for The Pike, and the bus could be seen dangling off the edge front-end first.

BostInno reached out to the MBTA for more information on the matter, and was referred to the MBTA Transit Police blog which notes that seven out of the ten passengers on board have been transported to nearby hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. The nearest hospital in the area is St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton.

Boston.com, though, is reporting that eight passengers have sustained injuries.

The blog notes further that the Transit Police were notified of the incident at approximately 7:35 a.m. It’s unclear what prompted the driver to swerve, but Transit Police recorded that the driver of the route 57 bus “veered to the left colliding with the guardrail.”

The Massachusetts State Police have secured the hanging bus and it no longer poses a threat to falling down onto The Pike below.

The investigation is still ongoing.

[UPDATE]: According to WCVB, the driver  has been charged with obstruction of justice and police detectives are seeking a search warrant to examine the cellphone records of the driver.

[UPDATE]: According to the Boston Globe, investigators are trying to determine whether the driver of the bus, who remains unnamed at this point, was using the cell phone accompanying him or her during the time of the crash. The investigation is still ongoing.
