Due to repeated snow-related service issues MBTA subway and commuter train riders will be allowed to ride for free on April 24 and May monthly LinkPasses will be sold for 15 percent off.

The decision was approved by a unanimous MassDOT board of directors vote Wednesday, the Boston Globe reports.

In February, outgoing general manager of the T, Beverly Scott, had suggested discounted fares – among other proposals – would be discussed as possible options as a way to repay riders for extended and all to frequent service inefficiencies due largely to historic amounts of snow.

Last week MassDOT chief Stephanie Pollack suggested that offering discounted rates would take valuable money away from the T that could otherwise be put towards much needed maintenance issues.
