The MBTA is advising Red Line commuters to consider taking a different mode of transportation Tuesday. Uber is one of those different modes, and its surge pricing rates are steep.

Update [9:30 a.m.]: Responding to BostInno’s tweet about this story, Dale Fuacata tweeted the below series of screenshots, showing the cost of uberX, uberXL, UberSUV, and UberBLACK trips from the North End to Logan Airport.

The eye-popping surge pricing rates for trips to Logan Airport suggest, clearly, that Tuesday morning commuters’ struggles extend beyond just Red Line delays.

Earlier: I took the above screenshot (at the very top) on my cell phone just after 8 a.m. Tuesday; I live in Somerville, and typically take the Red Line from either Davis Square or Porter Square.

But: “A week of constant exposure to frigid temperatures, ice, and record snowfall has taken a major toll on the MBTA’s vehicles and infrastructure,” T spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. “Due to a shortage of fully functioning subway cars, customers are asked to consider an alternative to the Red Line today.”

Given the historic amount of snow dumped on the Boston area recently, one would think trains and subways would fare better than cars. But the T is old. Very old. Especially the Red Line.

So those who need to take an Uber to work Tuesday morning should, unfortunately, be prepared to pay a little extra.
