The MBTA announced Friday afternoon that no late-night service will be offered Saturday night with another potential blizzard expected to hammer Boston with heavy snow and frigid temperatures.

“As part of its preparations for the net major snow storm,” the T’s website states both late-night bus and subway service has been canceled. The last subways out of downtown Boston are scheduled to depart no later than 12:50 a.m.

“This will allow MBTA personnel to get a jump start on snow-clearing operations and other maintenance activity before 3:30 a.m. (when Late Night service would typically end),” according to the T’s severe weather alert.

The weekend storm is expected produce blizzard conditions Saturday night which could last well into Sunday. Snow accumulations of 10 to 14 inches are expected along with strong winds gusting upwards of 60 mph at times. Travel is likely to become hazardous, if not impossible.

Friday morning, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement that if the T was not able to provide service due to the storm it would “pose incredible hardship” on the city – specifically the city’s economy – Valentine’s Day weekend.
