Color, a proximity-based photo sharing and discovery app, raised a whopping $41 million in venture funding.

The technology behind the app pulls in photos from people around you — whether you know them or not — displaying them within the app. When those people leave your proximity, their photos no longer show. What’s more, its machine learning will automatically learn who you’re most frequently in proximity to (like co-workers for example) and after time keep their recently snapped photos perpetually at the top.

The technology behind the app is taking a lot of work out of photo sharing, and solving many issues other photo sharing apps face. My major qualm with its current design (aside from no one yet using it): you can only take photos from within the Color app; you can’t pull photos in from your photo album (which would include photos you’ve added effects to with apps like Hipstamatic and Instagram).

We’ll see how quickly Color can grow its user base and network, but with $41M in fresh funding they should have no problem getting the word out.
