The Nexus 7 release date and specs are now in question as leaked photos, a video, and cryptic Google event invitation have tech junkies everywhere wondering what’s in store for the next-generation Nexus tablet. Taking place on July 24, the Google event is expected to be the choice launching pad for what’s being unofficially and aptly dubbed the ‘new Nexus 7.’

To be clear, Google has yet to confirm what exactly is slated to take place at the event or even the existence of a next-gen Nexus tablet. The invitation calls for breakfast with Sundar Pichai, who just happens to be Google’s VP Android, Chrome and Google Apps, three critical components sure to be found in the Nexus.

As for the rumored specs, we’re expecting an Asus-manufactured device with 7-inch LCD display with 1920×1200 resolution, as well as 16GB and 32GB internal storage options. It’s alleged to also carry 2 cameras, a 1.2MP front-facing shooter and a 5MP rear. Be sure to keep an eye out for a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Underneath the hood the gadget will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor along with what Android Central assumes will be somewhere between 2GB of RAM and an impressive 4GB. It’s purported that the next-gen Nexus will also have microUSB support for increased storage and memory.

It’s likely to be outfitted with Google’s 4.3 version of Android, which is rumored to be released with minor updates in the near future, and include features like NFC capabilities a 4000mAh battery with QI wireless charging.

As for the all-important cost, Engadget has an inside source who claims to have an accurate inventory shot that slaps the upcoming Nexus tab with a $269 pricetag for the 32GB storage version.

The new Nexus 7 was initially thought to debut at the annual Google I/O developers conference back in May but was strikingly absent. A late-summer release date will peg the consumer availability sometime just before the holidays, barring any snags or production issues.
