Very few things compete with the sheer awesomeness of playoff hockey. The widespread city pride, those crazy beards, and the riots celebrations afterwards are all unparalleled in the wide, wide world of sports. But if you can’t watch or play in person, you might as well do it virtually. And if you do, the in-game fighting better be realistic. This is exactly what EA Sports was thinking when it integrated the new Enforcer Engine in upcoming NHL 14 video game to be released September 10.

The EA Sports claims the Enforcer Engine offers the most authentic and exhilarating hockey experience ever, especially for the game’s most brutal tradition, fighting. Judging by the trailer, they could be right.

An all new third-person presentation allows for multiple-angled viewing, allowing you to enjoy hockey’s ruthless battling from the vantage point of a jersey-donning spectator instead of the tunnel vision introduced with NHL 10. That means that no one pair of skaters can fight at a time. Players on the ice will interact, taunt, and tussle with each other regardless of who’s already throwing haymakers.

Be sure to keep your wits about you, though, as real-time fight damage adds to the authenticity by giving your player black-and-blues throughout the entire game if they take one, or more, to the face. But when you win, it’s electrifying. User-controlled celebrations let you work the crowd hard after taking down your opponent, or taunt your opponent further if you’re really feeling it.

‘Heat of the Moment’ fights is a new feature that goes beyond just two players squaring off. Now, instead of players having to agree to start throwing fists, it can happen instantaneously because nobody ever agrees or disagrees to fight in hockey. If you lay a hit on the other team’s goalie or superstar, expect retribution from your opponents. All-out, gloves off until one player remains standing.
