Today OfficeDrop, the Cambridge-based document scanning and management provider, released a new product: Desktop Cloud Connector. This downloadable desktop app enables their small business customers to scan paper into the cloud and quickly sync it across desktops and employees in their organization (“upload from one and access from all”). The product offering is in response to the overall appetite of businesses for cloud-based services as well as OfficeDrop’s first-hand observations of a change in how its customers were uploading documents.

Yankee Group recently found that in two years, 39% of enterprises plan to shift at least one-third of their IT budget to cloud services. And OfficeDrop has witnessed the change first-hand. “In the early months of 2010 well over half the documents put into our online filing system were uploaded via the browser. But last month, our self-scanning software and email submission have far surpassed the browser,” offered CEO Prassad Thammineni. “Our small business customers are telling us that they want to interact with cloud data from their desktops and with apps, and our Desktop Cloud Connector solves this problem.”

OfficeDrop was founded in 2007 as Pixly with an initial service whereby customers would snail mail paper documents (receipts, invoices, NDAs, POs, etc.) and Office Drop would digitize and convert them into text-searchable documents. Today they offer 25 different filetype formats for these scanned documents. OfficeDrop also provided these small business customers with document management, enabling them to organize the digitized documents into folders and apply labels, annotate them, share them to customers and employees alike, alongside a powerful content search engine.

Today, OfficeDrop provides tools for small businesses to “turn your filing cabinet into a digital office” offering integrations with Google Docs, Evernote and FreshBooks. OfficeDrop also has an API that allows developers or services looking to add paperless functionality to their offerings. You can check out their pricing options here, where they offer a special service for “scantrepreneurs” at $9.95/month. This announcement comes a year after OfficeDrop received awards for cloud computing at last year’s MITX Technology Awards as well as in the AlwaysOn Global 250.
