On the heels of Earth Day comes National Picnic Day. On Wednesday, April 23, just one day after we all celebrate our planet, we get an excuse to celebrate the beauty of the outdoors. Unfortunately for us, tomorrow’s forecast is rain. But just in case we luck out and there’s a sudden change in the weather (as Boston’s weather is prone to do), there’s a way we can all still celebrate. Central Square wine and artisanal food shop Central Bottle Wine + Provisions is offering rentals of fully stocked picnic baskets. Even if you’re stuck in the office, a picnic lunch might be the best way to remind yourself of warmer weather and easier days ahead. The retro-styled picnic basket costs $75. Yours for 48 hours, the basket comes fully stocked with delicious goodies. These include a choice of either beer or red, white, rosé or sparkling wine, a baguette from Boston bakery Iggy’s, local cheeses, sausage, fig jam, chocolate and olives. It also comes with two bottles of water and any tools you might need to enjoy your al fresco lunch, including a corkscrew, a mini cheese knife, a wooden cutting board, wine glasses, plates, napkins and silverware. You can order the basket by calling Central Bottle Wine + Provisions at (617) 225-0040 and placing your order, and the shop will have it ready and waiting for you when you want it. Just act fast: Orders must be made 24 hours in advance. After all, nothing says spring quite like a picnic – there’s even a holiday to prove it.
