Apple may be gearing up for its September 10 press event but a recent report suggests it won’t be releasing OS X 10.9 Mavericks later in October. The new claim goes against the consensus of many who speculated OS X Mavericks might be made available alongside iOS 7 as well as the iPhone 5S and low-cost iPhone 5C. Still, a late-October debut falls within the vague boundaries of an oft-discussed fall launch.

The report comes from tech blog 9to5mac courtesy of “sources with knowledge of the launch plans,” wishing to remain anonymous. Apple has been methodically releasing beta versions of OS X Mavericks every two weeks as it does with iOS 7 too though in comparison to the Cupertino-based company’s flagship desktop operating system, there’s been little leaked in terms of when Mavericks will be launched.

Without confirmation from Apple itself, we won’t know anything for sure until a comment is made. However, the 9to5mac article continues to note that Apple traditionally launches a new OS X during quarterly earnings announcements. Since “Apple traditionally shares its Q4 earnings numbers during the second half of October” it’s likely to follow suit this year and release Mavericks then. Apple is a notorious creature of habit.

Among the major overhauls to be included upon the release of Mavericks is Apple Maps as the disappointing mapping app resulted in the ousting of iOS chief Scott Forstall last year. Plagued with poor navigation, warped 3D city and landscape, and a striking lack of Apple’s signature user-friendliness, the Maps feature is certainly neat the top of Apples to-do list.

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) back in June, Apple showcased what it has planned for Maps and for Mavericks in general. Expect the GPS-based traveling guide to boast 3-D imaging of buildings and landmarks, which users can sync to their favorite locations and directions across all device.

Among the other improvements expected to come with the launch of Mavericks this fall include App Nap, Compressed Memory, Multitasking, Siri, and many more.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks is expected to launch this fall along with iOS 7, the next-gen iPad with Retina display, a possible iPad mini–though the iPad mini with Retina display likely won’t come into fruition until early 2014–the iPhone 5S, and the alleged low-costiPhone. Another item to keep an eye on is the purported iWatch. Patent photos andrecent hirings have led to significant speculation that Apple is gearing up for a smartwatch, though like the iPad mini with Retina display likely won’t launch until next year.
