Think back to when you were 14. At my junior high, heading to the bathroom sans lip gloss (or you know, roll-on face glitter) was a pointless journey. And if you wanted to be part of the so-called popular crowd, blotting, smearing, and dabbing in front of the mirror was a must.

Today? If I’m caught in the office bathroom with mascara in hand, I blush with embarrassment. It seems that a rigorous makeup routine has fallen out of style. And over-primping has become superficial rather than expected. The concern? “Makeup equals groomed and presentable, no makeup equals unprofessional and unkempt, and too much makeup means you can’t be taken seriously,” writes Refinery29. So where do we find middle ground?

The Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine wrote in a blog post, “Why I Don’t Wear Makeup,” that she’s not trying to start a “no-makeup revolution.” But for the no-makeup look to be truly accepted in all professional workplaces, it would have to be a revolution. So ladies, what will it be? Will we band together and picket outside every Sephora store? Probably not. Why? Well, for one reason: We like wearing makeup. It’s fun and makes us feel good.

Now, petitioning for a National No Makeup Day? That’s something I would get behind.
