Listen up, Boston. We don’t mind telling you not to drive and park in the city on Monday. It’s St. Patrick’s Day after all, and you’ve got better things to do than fumble around for quarters between the seats of your jalopy to feed the meter.

But if you’re so inclined, or have absolutely no other choice than to venture into Boston and scavenge for parking, than by all means. Parking will be free for the holiday.

But just know one thing: The celebratory day is not for St. Patrick’s Day; it’s for Evacuation Day. You know, that day when George Washington took to Dorchester Heights with cannons retrieved from Fort Ticonderoga courtesy of Henry Knox to alleviate the port of Boston from a British stranglehold.

Says the Boston Transportation Department:

Due to the Evacuation Day Holiday that will be celebrated in Suffolk County, parking will be free at City of Boston parking meters and there will be no time limits placed on metered parked on Monday, March 17, 2014. The Boston Transportation Department is advising drivers, however, that all other parking regulations in the City of Boston will remain in effect. This includes enforcement of both neighborhood street cleaning and resident parking programs.

In other words, you won’t get charged for putting your car to rest at a meter for the entire day. But if it’s in a resident parking spot, or there just happens to be street cleaning in the neighborhood you park in, be wary. You might still get a ticket or worse: towed.

Also keep in mind that St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Boston will be taking place on the preceding Sunday, with the annual breakfast and parade taking place in Southie along Broadway.
