If you happened to trek across the river to Cambridge on Friday, you might’ve noticed that some of the streets don’t appear as they typically do. Where you might usually find cars jammed tightly against the sidewalks, in many cases, there were parklets.

September 19 marks Cambridge’s third annual participation in the international phenomenon known as PARK(ing) Day in which cities across the globe transform public street parking for alternative uses.

Cambridge happens to be one of the most densely populated urban areas in the entire country. A consequence of this is a severe lack in open, green space for the public to leisurely enjoy.

So, naturally, Cambridge wanted to forget about that fact if only for just a single day, and see how its residents could creatively take the sentiment of PARK(ing) Day to heart for the benefit of everyone.

As an avid lover of pars and civic innovation, I made my way down from Harvard Square to Kendall Square to check these out. From baggo and lawn games to Professor Tea spinning beats so hot they’ll melt your face off (check out the slideshow and you’ll know what I’m talking about) Cambridge didn’t disappoint.

See for yourself.
