The vacant Filene’s space in Downtown Crossing is soon to be home to a popular European department store’s first expansion to the United States.

Filene’s, the Massachusetts-based department store chain, shuttered its four-story Downtown Crossing flagship location in 2006. Since then, the Filene’s main space, the Burnham Building, was named a city landmark, and its exterior was protected from destruction, while the inside was gutted by developers for a construction project that later lost funding.

Now, the shell of the Burnham Building will be transformed into the home of Primark, a Dublin, Ireland-based department store and one of the largest chains in Europe. The fashion brand will share the space with Havas Media and Arnold Worldwide, which will occupy floors five through eight.

As the chain expands, a deal was signed with Millenium Partners for the landmark building, and the new Boston store will include four floors of fashion. The new department store will help build out the vacated space in the Burnham Building/Millenium Tower, a mixed-use location aiming to become a “vibrant 24/7 city center,” according to the official release.

The Downtown Crossing location will be the first Primark store in the U.S. The department store is slated for a late 2015 opening and is a promising sign that development efforts are being concentrated in Downtown Crossing, as the uncompleted Filene’s space is now a construction eyesore in the busy area. But, bright things are coming, as Primark will add to the existing shopping options like Marshall’s, H&M and DSW.

Of the expansion of Primark to Downtown Crossing, Christopher M. Jeffries, a founding partner of Millenium Partners, said in the release:

No other retailer in the world suits this location better than Primark. It is a great privilege to be able to bring them to Boston. Our goal is to bring great architecture and great urban centers to great cities. In Primark we have a best-in-class, price-leading fashion retailer that all Bostonians can enjoy.

Primark offers hip, to-the-moment fashion at affordable, competitive prices, and it’s hugely popular in the U.K. and other European countries. This is an exciting addition to Downtown Crossing and great news for those who were sad to see Filene’s go. But, no promises that Primark will host any “Running of the Brides” sales. That tradition likely died with Filene’s.
