Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia announced today that he has signed on to be the newest face of Vita Coco. Vita Coco is the brand credited with bringing the coconut water craze to America. The drink, now with multiple flavors, is sold at over 20,000 retailers including Whole Foods, GNC, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Costco, Wal-Mart, and many others. Madonna, Demi Moore and Matthew McConaughey are investors behind the company.

Pedroia will be a spokesperson for the brand, with his advertising campaign aimed specifically at Boston. You’ll have to wait until a bit later in June, when the campaign is slotted to run to see what sort of flavor of an ad he’s taking part in.

It seems as though Vita Coco is looking to market their coconut water to as an uber hydrator for athletes, with the announcement mentioning the drinks electrolytes, potassium (5 times that of sports drinks), and vitamin C.

“I’m a big Vita Coco fan!” Pedroia said in his announcement. “I keep a stock of it in the locker room fridge, and I drink it every game to stay hydrated and avoid cramps.”

He supposedly prefers it over artificial sports drinks for “optimal hydration.”
