Boston continues to push to the forefront of bike-friendly cities but there’s still plenty of room left for improvement. Sure Hubway is now open for the season, Mayor Walsh helped create an affordable bike-share membership program, and Boston’s bike lanes will undergo green renovations. But when it comes to biking at night, the gears are turning much slower.

A lesser focus on safety and night biking comes as no real surprise. After all, the city is enjoying extended late-night weekend T and bus service which helps to transport those who burn the midnight oil (often in the food service industry) home safely.

But after a Charlestown cyclist was fatally struck by a car in broad daylight, one easily could imagine the lacking safety features afforded to those who take to the road once the sun goes down.

Kickstarter campaign is aiming to make roads safer for bikers at night by mounting stationary bright lights to the rear fenders of a rider’s respective bike. The company called Revolights has raised $59,158 of its $100,000 crowdfunding goal with 12 days left to collect pledges.

The new taillight system, dubbed the Revolights Arc, acts like the rear brake lights of an automobile. Sensors are able to translate speeds into lighting sequences that alert fellow riders or car drivers of a change in speed – the Arc lights either gets brighter or blinks faster to indicate deceleration.

According to the Kickstarter video above, money raised through crowdfunding will go towards the final stage development as well as manufacturing tools and molds needed to bring the Arc into fruition.

To make things easier and bring safety to another level, Revolights will be offering a bike fender of their own with a permanently pre-installed Arc. The LED lights also run on a detachable lithium ion battery pack that’s easily charged by simply plugging in to a USB port.

Even cooler is that Revolights is working on incorporating turn signal lights dictated by the handlebar.
