It was announced today that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, have officially named their first born son and third in line to the British throne George Alexander Louis. Speculation and rumors were abound as bookmakers everywhere were taking wagers on what the royal baby’s name would be.

The baby was born on Monday weight a healthy 8lbs, 6oz. Yesterday, the Duchess left the hospital for the first time alongside her husband making the baby’s first public appearance, as well as their first since his birth.

During their brief moment in front of the massive crowd (not to mention the dozens of cameras representing an array of international news outlets), the Duchess and Duke agreed that the last 24 hours had been “very emotional.” William joked that he would have to remind his son of his “tardiness” later on in life, acknowledging that so many had been waiting with such great anticipation for the young prince’s arrival.

Following their brief chat with the press, the two royals returned inside briefly before a car was pulled around for their departure back to Kensington Palace. In a notable show of normalcy, William carried his son into the car, placing him safely in the vehicle before taking the wheel himself for the short drive over to the palace, where Kate, William and their son will stay for an indefinite period of time.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama yesterday after the royal baby was born:

“Michelle and I are so pleased to congratulate The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child.  We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings.  The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations.  Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince.”
