Recently, the Boston-based RunKeeper data group teamed up with Runner’s World to see how different states in our nation stack up against each other when it comes to running behavior with regards to pace, distance and frequency.

And we’re happy to report that our healthy Hub has come in at number one!

The data reports that Massachusetts came in first for pace at an average 10:05 minute per mile. According to RunKeeper,

New England dominates in this category, with Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island capturing the top three spots. Many of the “slow-and-steady” regions are found in the lower latitudes, perhaps because the hotter weather in southern states isn’t always conducive to running really fast.

And while we may be speedy, our distance isn’t too bad either. Statistics show Massachusetts ranked fourth for mileage at an average of 4.1 miles per run. Our frequency, however, may be something we can improve on. Falling into the fourteenth slot, our Commonwealth only averaged 3.4 runs per month. Time to step it up, Boston.

But before you start lacing up those kicks due to the pressure of the rankings, Massachusetts also logged the most miles per capita.

Runner’s World states, “This is calculated by taking the total number of miles stored in RunKeeper throughout the year and dividing that number by the state’s population. Note that only runs recorded with the app – and not manually recorded treadmill runs – are included in this.”

So keep up the great work, Boston. It seems our healthy ways are definitely paying off.
