What’s the fastest way to get from Davis Square to South Station? Should you hop on your fixie? Take the T? Drive?

On Tuesday morning, we will find out. The LivableStreets Alliance, a local transportation non-profit agency, is partnering with the Somerville Bicycle Committee to host the second annual Rush Hour Race. The race pits five modes of commuter transportation in a race against each other from Davis Square to South Station to determine which is the fastest way to travel.

“Rush Hour Race is an event to raise awareness about all the ways we get around our city,” said Jackie Douglas, executive director of LivableStreets. “More and more people want transportation options and investing in them is critical. By investing in many different ways to get around, such as biking, walking and public transit, our rush hour commutes can improve.”

In 2012, the Rush Hour Race went from Davis to Kendall Square, and the bicyclist came in first place, beating out the Red Line rider by 10 minutes, while the car trailed far behind.

This year, the route was extended from Kendall Square to South Station, the busiest rail station in New England in order to draw more attention to the finish line, explains Kara Oberg from LivableStreets.
Additionally, two new forms of transportation were added to the mix: running and inline skating. Note: If that runner is anywhere near as slow as me, he’s going lose the race by 40 minutes. Also, inline skating should never be an acceptable mode of commuting ever.
But I digress. The race will be an eye-opening look at just how long it takes to get from point A to point B in Boston, and may make you reconsider how you get to work in the morning.
To check it out, head over to Redbones  for the pre-race ceremony at 7:30 a.m., or meet down at Dewey Square between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. to find out the winner. BostInno will also be posting a piece with the winner on Tuesday morning.
