Timothy Wells of Woburn, 25, the suspect wanted in a double-stabbing on Salem State’s campus yesterday, was arrested last night.

Wells was apprehended around 10 p.m. after his car broke down on the highway in Chatham N.Y., the AP reports. He is expected to face a New York judge Thursday and is expected to be extradited to Massachusetts, NECN reports.

The suspect was sought by police for two counts of assault with intent to murder, a Salem State spokeswoman said. Salem State was informed of his arrest last night.

Wells, a senior at Salem State, had been on leave from the school for about two or three weeks, Boston.com reports, before yesterday’s alleged incident.

Wells is said to have fled campus after 11:10 a.m. Wednesday morning, moments after allegedly assaulting a female student and a bus driver, both of whom sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Students were ordered to shelter in place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. when university officials heard reports that the suspect might return to campus.

Nearby elementary school, Horace Mann Laboratory School, was also on lockdown.

Wells reportedly faced another outstanding warrant for failing to appear in Salem District Court following a Sept. 3 arrest by Salem police. That incident also involved a knife, according to Boston.com.

Salem State students are back in class this morning, NECN reports.
