Hot on the heels of Apple’s record breaking iPhone sales weekend, rumors are beginning to swirl that Samsung is eyeing metallic casing for its Galaxy S5 flagship expected to debut next year. Samsung historically outfits its line of handsets in plastic but after witnessing Apple push a combination of 9 million iPhone 5Ss and iPhone 5Cs, the South Korea-based electronics giant appears poised to set its gadgets on new direction.

This latest piece of gossip comes courtesy of SamMobile, an all-Samsung fan blog dedicated to even the most minute rumors and fact leaks. According to the site, the “Taipei Times suggests that Samsung is in talks with Catcher Technology, a Taiwanese company that makes the metal bodies of the HTC One and Apple’s iPad, for securing metal cases for ‘at least one of its high-end smartphone models from the second quarter next year.'”

Apple has always separated itself from the ever-saturated high-end smartphone market by encasing its iPhone lineup in anodized aluminum, igniting what Samsung could perpetuate as the latest trend to disrupt the market.

The source continues to note that should the rumors hold some validity, we aren’t likely to see a next-gen metallic Galaxy S device until Q2 2014 at the very earliest though during that time Samsung will be entertaining bids from other manufactures as well as mulling over the idea of making its own backplates in order to keep everything in-house. Should the latter prove to be the case, “it’s likely they’ll splitting production between multiple suppliers to meet the huge demand the Galaxy S5 (or whatever the next flagship is called) would create.”

There’s been virtually no word yet on any other specs and even the idea of a metal-encased Galaxy S smartphone is nothing more than a rumor. That being said, it’s admittedly a sexy rumor. So for those whose fancy has just been tickled, let us know what you think about the possibility of a metal Galaxy smartphone and whether or not you’d consider making a purchase.
