We’ve all heard it before: First impressions matter. And guess what? Your hairstyle plays a big part in those initial make-or-break 30 seconds. If you’re looking for a haircut that screams, “I’m the girl for the job,” opting for a short bob – also known as the “Power Bob” – might be your best bet.

Why? A shorter, face-framing style is considered the most powerful haircut in the U.S. Out of 23 female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, 15 wear a bob. Hewlett-Packard’s Meg Whitman sports one with layers, while Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer prefers a sleek, stick-straight look. And yes, there’s actually scientific research proving the success of a shorter mane. According to The Journal of Social Psychology, a woman will be considered for more “masculine jobs,” such as managerial positions, with a less feminine cut. In short (no pun intended…), women with chopped tresses are perceived as smarter and more confident than those without.

Now, I’ve opted for long hair for years. But come to think of it, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and even Jennifer Lawrence have chosen this cut. Will I be heading to the salon as soon as 5PM hits? Probably not. In my opinion, as long as you rock your locks with confidence, no matter the length, success will follow. But who knows – come find me in about ten years, when I’m in the Executive Suite. Then we’ll talk.
