On Thursday the Massachusetts legislature will consider multiple bills aimed at bolstering the list of official symbols of the commonwealth. Appearing before the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight, two of the proposed measures are musically inclined while another may add some flavorful flare to the Bay State.

The first legislation, introduced by Mayor-elect Marty Walsh, is an attempt to make the song “Roadrunner” by The Modern Lovers the official rock song of the state. Contenting that designation is a similar bill by the duo of state Representatives James Cantwell (D-Marshfield) and Josh Cutler (D-Duxbury) to make it antiquated Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

Also being debated is a measure proposed by state Rep. James Murphy (D-Weymouth) to make Bell’s Seasoning the official seasoning of Massachusetts.

But where does this madness stop?

As a taxpayer, I’m not particularly thrilled that Beacon Hill is gluttonously devouring taxpayer dollars, legislative manpower, and other applicable resources to debate these matters of inconsequence, even with a pinch of presumably tasty Bell’s Seasoning sprinkled on top.

More than anything, though, it made me wonder what other items Beacon Hill brass has spent time deliberating. Some of them are fitting in the context of history, but others much more questionable. See for yourself.
