Notoriously rowdy spring breakers are really going to outdo themselves this time.

Or at least, that’s what law enforcement officials in Florida presume.  According to an AP article via the Star Tribune, officials in Pensacola prepped for the onslaught of twenty-somethings by ramping up their emergency medical staff.

And by creating portable jails.

The frigid winter the rest of the country has experienced has sent everyone running for a warm and tropical vacation. Soaring costs during the in-season haven’t deterred travelers from setting their sights on the sunshine – advanced hotel bookings show a record season coming up, Paul Phipps, spokesman for Visit Florida, said in an interview with the AP.

The “mobile booking unit with a juvenile detention area” will be set up in the Panama City Beach area, allowing officers to crack down on underage drinking and general spring break mischief without having to make the hours-long trek from the beach to the county jail. Essentially an outdoor cage for underage and/or misbehaving young people, the “detention area” is an accommodation worthy of the genius (and horrid) film Spring Breakers.

Panama City alone expects to see 250,000-300,000 college students during the spring break season, according to the article. And 211 arrests were made in the first week of nationwide spring breaks, far more than Boston managed during its (also notoriously rowdy) St. Patricks Day Parade on Sunday – though the St. Paddy’s festivities still garnered 293 citations.

With the excess of New Englanders heading South to escape the ongoing drear, it looks like Florida may be wise to make some extra preparations.
