Well, it’s about time. Something Boston residents and visitors already suspected has finally been confirmed. According to a new survey taken by CheapHotels.org, “Boston is the United States’ most expensive city based on the cost of lodging.” So, before your friends and family pack up to visit this month, you might want to share this little tidbit.

The study compared three-star hotel nightly rates in the 50 most popular U.S. cities by evaluating the cheapest “available double room” option for the month of October 2013. This month was chosen because it happens to be the most expensive time to travel for most of us. The Sacramento Bee reported that “only a few cities, for example New York City and Atlanta, are slightly more expensive in September” as well as “certain beach destinations, such as San Diego and Virginia Beach,” which would typically be more expensive during the month of August.

In Boston, the most affordable double room will cost visitors and tourists $242 per-night (wowwy!). And it’s no surprise that the number two spot goes to New York City, with an average nightly rate of $226. Nashville came in third at $217, San Francisco in fourth at $178 and fifth place went to Austin at $174 per night. The top ten rankings are below:

1. Boston $242

2. New York City $226

3. Nashville $217

4. San Francisco $178

5. Austin $174

6. Washington DC $173

7. Pittsburgh $167

8. Houston $165

9. Louisville $164

10. Columbus $164

Hopefully this (along with the government shutdown) won’t stop people from visiting our great city. But despite these high prices, I’m pretty sure our lobstah, sports and history will keep ’em coming.
