Move over Whole Foods – downtown Boston will soon have an even bigger grocery store option. And the best part is – it’ll be especially convenient for North Station commuters. The Boston Herald is reporting that Star Market, a West Bridgewater chain, has “signed a long-term lease for a 63,000-square-foot grocery store in Boston Properties and Delaware North’s ?$950 million, mixed-use TD Garden project.”

To put that in perspective, the recently opened South End Whole Foods location is just 50,000 square-feet. This means that the TD Garden Star Market will be the largest downtown Boston supermarket. And, to the relief of many, will finally bring a more affordable grocery store option to downtown residents and professionals.

Since coming under new ownership, the Star Market brand, which is a part of the Shaw’s Supermarkets umbrella, has experienced a revival in Massachusetts. According to the Boston Business Journal, the new owners “have ambitious plans to expand the Star Market chain again by converting many Shaw’s stores into Star Market locations.”

And this upcoming North Station location seems to be a part of that plan.

The Herald notes that “an escalator will take shoppers to the new lower-level Star Market, which will emphasize hot prepared foods, alcohol, cut produce and organics, and include a cheese shop, pizza and salad bars, sushi, a seating area, pharmacy and Starbucks.”

We’ll be sure to update you as we learn more about the new Star Market. In the meantime, it’s never too early to start mapping out your new after-work grocery shopping plan.
