As wonderful as the holiday season is with its merrymaking, feasting, and socializing, it’s also exhausting. And come January, there’s no place I’d rather be than on a beach halfway through a pińa colada or shopping oceanside. But how does one pack for all these fun-filled activities (without bringing along three super-sized suitcases)? Well, it’s all about items that work overtime.

For Soaking Up the Sun
It sounds like a no-brainer, but make sure to start with the essentials (a bright bathing suit, personality-packed towel… you know the drill). Then top with a sundress or polo that you’re willing to be seen wearing in public. Because lunch on the boardwalk is a must, while a totally sheer cover-up is not.

For Discovering New Places
This look always has to be the most versatile. Put-together enough for all those photos you’ll be Instagramming – yet comfortable enough for a day filled with walking. That means slip dresses and flats for her and easygoing shorts and canvas sneakers for him. And don’t forget the most important accessory: that camera phone.

For Dining Alfresco
Dinner at the resort, on the beach, or wherever demands an evening look that’s both dressed up and casual. Guys should stick to khakis and a (wrinkle-resistant) button-front with boat shoes, while colorful maxi dresses, sandals, and a beaded clutch will take women from cocktails on the patio to late-night dancing.

The Getaway Lookbook Boutique opens Friday, December 27, at 3PM ET.
