Sri: Last call: nominations for Coolest Companies closes tonight at midnight. Before you leave the office for the weekend, make sure to get them in!

The Big One

A breakdown on the day’s biggest Inno story.

Lucy: Veridium, a startup that wants to replace passwords with biometrics, has closed a Series B funding round worth $16.5M. The round was led by British entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Spencer, who reportedly invested $14.2M.

The remaining $2.3M come from Citrix Systems and financial services executive and investor Michael Powell. Spencer, Citrix and Powell will all join the company’s board.

Veridium, which has offices in Quincy, Mass. as well as in New York City and Europe, will use the money to accelerate its “aggressive growth trajectory,” CEO James Stickland said.

Specifically, Veridium – which has 75 global employees – will hire more people in sales and distribution, and it will continue its existing work in system engineering.

Plans for the Quincy office include hiring three to five people over the next 12 months to be added to the current 12 to 15 full-time and flexible employees. The new local hires will support the product marketing team, as well as sales and engineering.

This year has been rather eventful for SimpliSafe, which struck many key partnerships including integrations with Alexa and Apple watch. Read more: PE Firm Acquires Controlling Stake in Home Security Startup SimpliSafe

Your daily funding roundup.

Sri: Yesterday BitSight raised $60M from Warburg Pincus to “rapid global expansion and extend its portfolio of market-leading security risk management solutions.” But this comes at a time when rival FICO is offering free cybersecurity scores to companies worldwide. When launched in 2011, BitSight’s product was first of its kind, but today the company has many worthy opponents, some bigger even. While opportunities abound, there are over a dozen startups in the cybersecurity space, each clamoring for a bigger piece of the pie, especially in Boston, which has emerged as a cybersecurity hub over the last few years. Read more: Cybersecurity Ratings Startup BitSight Raises $60M to Take on FICO
