The key to jeans that fit flawlessly? Knowing your measurements before you order online. Here, a guide to get you started – simply click on the image below to open and print.

WHAT TO MEASURE
Read the product measurements under the “Details” section of your chosen pair of jeans on Rue, then grab your measuring tape

  1. Waist: Tilt to the side and find the bend of your natural waist. Keep your measuring tape snug (try placing a finger between your skin and the tape) and measure around. This is your standard denim size.
  2. Front and back rise: Wearing a pair of well-fitting jeans, measure from the bottom of the crotch seam to the top front of the waistband to log the front rise, and the bottom of the seam to the top back of the waistband to log the back rise.
  3. Inseam: Still in these jeans, measure from the bottom of the crotch seam to the bottom of the hem, following the inside seam.
  4. Leg opening: Measure the circumference of your ankle. This determines the jean’s cut. Unless a jean fabric has stretch, the leg opening measurement must be larger than this circumference measurement.

DIFFERENT BRANDS, DIFFERENT FITS
Here’s a quick look at five top brands and how they run

  • 7 For All Mankind: Characteristically low-waisted. Its Slim Illusion jean boasts maximum stretch and retention for incredible shape.
  • HUDSON Jeans: A straight-figure favorite, its signature button-flap back pockets sit low to add shape.
  • AG Jeans: Master of the boot-cut. Case in point: The Ballad, which sits slim through the hip, thigh, and knee, and lengthens the leg.
  • J Brand: Famous for its skinny jean, these tend to be true to size.
  • NYDJ: Designed to make you look a size smaller with Lift Tuck Technology and control-front panels.
