Everyone’s talking about the World Cup – yes, every four years, soccer comes along and outdoes our beloved pastime, baseball, as the most talked-about sport around the country. And today, USA is taking on Portugal at 6 p.m., but don’t forget that before that, the Red Sox are playing the Oakland Athletics in California at 4:05 p.m. Not only that, but there’s an outdoor viewing party that shouldn’t be missed on such a gorgeous day.

This season, the Highland Street Foundation, Mayor Marty Walsh and the City of Boston and the Red Sox Organization have teamed up to bring away games to the big screen in city parks. The “Out of the Park” series began on May 25, and will continue today, June 22, when the game will be broadcast in Dorchester’s Franklin Park. The series will next return on July 27 in the Boston Common.

The Out of the Park events feature a live viewing of the Red Sox game, streamed by NESN, and a live announcer will be on hand at the park to cut in with commentary. The series is also meant to bring the experience of Fenway Park and Yawkey Way to the outdoor viewings, with caricaturists, balloon artists, face painters, giveaways, free popcorn, ice cream from Hood and Kayem’s Fenway Franks all available during the game, while Wally the Green Monster, Fenway Park DJ TJ Connelly and the Hot Tamale Brass Band will make special appearances. Families are also encouraged to pack a picnic and bring a blanket to the viewing.

The viewings are free, and all are welcome. Today’s outdoor viewing will take place at The Playstead in Franklin Park, located at 25 Pierpont Road. And when the game’s over, here’s where you should be watching the World Cup.
