THIS WEEK IN PR NEWS | APRIL 17, 2015

Each week PRLab scours the internet to bring you the latest stories in public relations news. This week, Guitar Hero tries to comeback, Nike launches a new campaign, and Coachella proves the power of Snapchat. See the full stories below.

GUITAR HERO MAKES A COMEBACK

The Story: Everyone remembers Guitar Hero, the video game that allowed you to act as if you were the lead guitarist for ACDC. Well, that game is attempting to make a comeback by creating some new innovations.

What Happened? Guitar Hero has worked hard to film real audiences from the viewpoint of a band’s lead guitarist. Unlike the 2007 game, this new launch will have real humans cheering you on or booing you. This, Activision (the brand behind Guitar Hero), hopes will provide a more lifelike experience for their gamers.

Why is this important? Many people love Guitar Hero, but it will be interesting to see if their comeback will thrive. This brand will have to win over customers who seemed to get bored with the game after a period of time.

NIKE’S CAMPAIGN TOWARDS WOMEN

The Story: Nike has recently launched a campaign targeted solely at women. The campaign is known as #BetterForIt.

What Happened? #BetterForIt seeks to empower women to go the extra mile for their health. Recently, Nike launched their first video for the campaign at the 2015 MTV Music Video Awards. The video is called “Inner Thoughts” and documents what an array of women are thinking during their workouts.

Why is this important? Women have always seemed to be an afterthought when it comes to fitness and sports. With the rise of popular athletic wear brands such as Lululemon, Victoria Secret, and Athleta, women have been more driven than ever to work out. Nike is now targeting these women with the acknowledgement that they may already be active, but to always face new challenges regardless of the outcome.

COACHELLA AND SNAPCHAT

The Story: Snapchat used their new feature “Our Story” to allow snappers to view the Coachella music festival from anywhere.

What Happened? On Monday, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel announced that over 40 million users watched the Coachella Snapchat story. This statistic was compared to the Master’s Golf Tournament, where only 17.7 million viewers tuned in to watch on TV.

Why is this important? This statistic shows the power of social media. The power of Snapchat to reach so many viewers is mind boggling and proves how important social media is in effective marketing.

THINGS TO KNOW

PepsiCo just recently attained NBA sponsorship rights. This is incredibly important because those same sponsorship rights were taken from none other than their fiercest competitor, Coca-Cola.
