Get your cocktail shaker ready! This Saturday, May 3 marks the 140th Annual Kentucky Derby. And you can bet your big brimmed hat, we’ll be watching the “most exciting two minutes in sports” in high style. But besides the seersucker, dapper costumes and over-the-top hats, no Derby day is complete without a Mint Julep.

The cocktail is a staple when it comes to Derby festivities (and in the South, in general). As a native southerner, I can attest that we do indeed like (read: love) our bourbon – a lot. There’s really no occasion that isn’t bourbon appropriate – except for church, of course. But here in Boston, there are also quite a few fantastic Mint Julep options.

One of which will be making an appearance this Saturday at Trade. The downtown restaurant is hosting a sold-out Kentucky Derby Party filled with southern bites and cocktails. However, for those who didn’t reserve their space at the soiree, the restaurant will also be serving the cocktails all day and evening long.

Trade’s Bar Manager, Jon Mendez, has created a Mint Julep cocktail with a twist – appropriately coined the “Re-Minted Julep.” I was lucky enough to try it this week before its debut on Saturday – and can attest that it’s delish.

The refreshing Derby-themed cocktail features Smoked Bourbon with basil, yuzu and mint. Take a look for yourself (above) and start planning your Derby day drinking, today.

To try it for yourself, stop by Trade tomorrow, May 3.
