UPDATE: Robert Caret has confirmed he will be resigning to return to Maryland and the University System of Maryland

University of Massachusetts President Robert Caret is expected to resign. It’s being reported that Caret is leaving the UMass system to take a top position with the University System of Maryland.

According to the Boston Globe, Caret will become the new chancellor of Maryland’s system despite recently signing a three-year contract extension with the UMass board of trustees.

MassLive, however, is reporting that “no decision has been made” quite yet, though a formal announcement could come within the next day or two.

UMass spokesman Robert P. Connolly told MassLive that “President Caret confirms that he is in discussions with the University System of Maryland about its chancellorship, discussions that continue, and has not resigned as president of the University of Massachusetts.”

Caret became the 26th president of UMass in 2011, succeeding Jack Wilson (2003-2011) and former state Senate President Billy Bulger (1996-2003) – yes, Whitey’s brother.

Prior to running the UMass system, Caret was president of Towson University where, according to his UMass bio, he worked in several capacities including “a faculty member, dean, executive vice president and provost.” He was also the preisdent of San Jose State University.

Back in 2013, the $34 billion state budget allowed Caret to freeze tuition and fees for the academic year.
