Valentine’s Day is, ahem, this Saturday. Not sure what you’re giving your sweetie in honor of the holiday? No sweat. It’s kind of a sham of a holiday, anyway.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t expectations surrounding February 14, and it’s nice to have an excuse to show your appreciation for your loved one, even if it means shelling out some cash to Hallmark. Of course, the gift you give should appropriately reflect the time you’ve spent with the person. If you surprised her with a diamond ring two weeks in, don’t be surprised if you’re met with more shock than excitement.

So we’ve rustled up some gift ideas for each relationship landmark. Oh, and if you’ve yet to make a reservation, might we recommend a restaurant?

1 to 3 weeks

For him: A small gesture is more than enough. Pick up a bottle of his favorite craft whiskey or six pack of beer, and crack them open on the couch. For a local spin, we suggest grabbing a growler at Harpoon’s Beer Hall or stopping by Bully Boy Distillers in Roxbury for a pint of whiskey. If he’s not the boozing type, a small token like a wallet clip or cufflinks from a nice store – like Cuffs & Collars on Water Street – show you care.

For her: Tickets to a movie at the cozier, more personal theaters like Coolidge or Brattle topped off with her favorite candy? Golden. Make sure you take her for a trip at one of the city’s best wine stores – like the Naked Grape – for a post-movie glass of vino. Looking for something a little more hands-on? M.Flynn, a jewelry store in Boston’s South End, offers a selection of well-crafted but still affordable earrings.

1 to 6 months

For him: Get him the tools to cook an at-home dinner from Blue Apron, a service that sends all the ingredients to make meals. You’ll be the one cooking, of course. Splurge for an On Demand movie, rather than a Netflix instant play, and bask in the romance. Just don’t forget dessert.

For her: Concert or stand-up comedy tickets are a fun alternative to getting out of the house that’s not a traditional dinner – for shows happening in February, click here. Now is also a great time to go for the old faithful: a bouquet of fancy flowers. Forego the grocery store’s selection and head straight to the big leagues, Winston Flowerson Newbury Street. In light of all the recent snowfall, Winston is still assuring its customers that flowers will get delivered in time for the holidays.

6 to 12 months

For him: Tickets to a Bruins game are a great bet for the sports-lover, and if you’re this many months in, you’ll want to splurge for good seats. But, he’s sure to be cold during a hockey game – or at least during all this snow – so a cashmere scarf from Blank Label or warm hat from Goorin Bros. will top off the gift nicely.

For her: Create an at-home spa day. Stop at Lush and Bluemercury for bath bombs, body butters, oils and more, and complement the indulgence spree with a lush new robe and slippers from a nearby boutique like Forty Winks.

More than one year

For him: With snow piled high, invest in a new pair of winter boots for your guy, as his might be wearing out from continuous show shoveling. L.L. Bean has shearling lined options (that aren’t backordered), and Boston Boot Co. makes a variety of sturdy boots that don’t sacrifice a sleek look. If he’s hurting in the clothing department, it’s hard to go wrong with a high-tech shirt from Ministry of Supply.

For her: If she’s always saying she has nothing to wear, here’s what to do. Get her a subscription to Wardrobe Wake-Up, a service that rents out high-end tops and dresses to women looking to boost their closets without the investment. Monthly subscriptions run around $40 a month, and can easily be gifted. Think her wardrobe is good to go? A dress from local clothing line Brass is high quality without the high markup. And by now, you know her style.
