The Wellesley Police Department rescued a dog named Cooper on Sunday morning after the Golden Doodle found itself trapped on the icy Charles River.

According to the WPD, police responded to a call at 10:29 a.m. that a dog had fallen through the ice on the Charles near the Elm Bank Reservation.

The police dispatcher was able to zero in on the pooch’s exact location in the reservation using by tracking the position of the caller’s mobile device through GPS tracking.

The day prior, Cooper had been on a walk with his owner when he became separated. The owner proceeded to scour the area and return on Sunday to put up flyers when another person notified the owner that Cooper had been spotted near the river bank.

Cooper ended up on the ice and fell through. He was able to latch himself on to a tree branch nearby. He’s the third dog since last year to fall through the ice in this particular location of the reservation.

After the rescue, which involved police and firefighters donning cold water ice rescue suits and jumping into the river themselves, a nearby vet determined that Cooper’s health would do very well. A stint drying off inside a toasty Engine 1 certainly helped.
